Breaking Records

Breaking Records

Evan McPherson went from hating running to breaking the school's record time. In middle school, McPherson played basketball and football. He first joined cross country to be with friends and quickly learned about the difficulties of the sport. McPherson was one of the slowest on the team and would often get left behind when they ran; regardless, he pushed on. Rosemary Stephens and Brayden Tabler, who were upperclassmen runners when McPherson was in middle school, pushed him to be a better runner and he started to enjoy running. He was also extremely inspired by Ron Dunfee, who had set the…

Finishing Strong

Finishing Strong

Hey Fed Hock! Editor in Chief here. We here at LLN, myself especially, wanted to give one final cheer to the year 2022-23. We've accomplished a lot as a school, from our basketball team's win streak, to a strong opening year for our new principal, Mr. Amlin, to a successful expansion of this very news station! It's been a busy, but rewarding year for Federal Hocking, as I'm sure you all can agree. And as we leave for the summer, we can look back on many aspects of this year with a smile. We're anticipating a few changes in the…

Basim Signs with Rio Grande

Basim Signs with Rio Grande

On Tuesday May 9, 2023, Federal Hocking High School senior, Mia Basim, signed her letter of intent with the University of Rio Grande, a private university in Rio Grande, Ohio. Rio Grande recognized Mia’s golfing skills and granted her a scholarship.  Do you remember when Covid hit, school was closed and events were canceled? When most sports were postponed, including softball which Mia and her friends played, instead of doing nothing all season they joined the only open season sport left–golf.  They started working and practicing their skills. Mia told me that golf was easy to understand, but hard to…

See Ya, Mr. Wryst

See Ya, Mr. Wryst

A long time member of our staff, Mr. Wryst,  will be retiring at the end of the year. Working here for almost 30 years, he’s become a fixture in the school community.  Mr. Wryst grew up in Henrietta Township, Ohio, seven miles south of Lake Eerie; “I grew up next to a corn field,” he told me, where he worked every day for his family business, Henrietta Packaging. He moved to Athens, Ohio when he started going to Ohio University.  At first he didn’t know what his major would be. He was studying zoology, and one of his friends was…

High School and the Dangers of Insomnia

High School and the Dangers of Insomnia

Picture this. You have an assignment due first thing in the morning, it’s already 10:00 at night, and this essay on how old Mrs. Dubose embodies the theme of true courage in To Kill a Mockingbird won’t write itself. How do we fix this problem? Well, we stay up until 3 in the morning to write the essay. Now, you have to wake up at 6 with only three hours of sleep, and you end up falling asleep during third block, and get in trouble. Then, that night when you get home you can’t fall asleep at your normal time…

Copyright and Fair Use: What is it?

Copyright and Fair Use: What is it?

Copyright infringement has destroyed lots of companies just because the logos look similar. Some are even within the right of fair use. Some were just complete copies. Let’s learn about copyright and how to use fair use. When you look at a label and you see that “©” symbol next to company names, what do you think that is? That is called the copyright symbol meaning that the name is copyrighted and using it in things that you make and sell could land you in court or jail. If you have a copyright name on your branding and you have…

Katie (Knopp) Garner, Class of 2004

Katie Garner attended Federal Hocking High School and graduated in 2004. She is now the Family Education Intervention Coordinator for Sojourners Care Network. Katie said, “Federal Hocking provided me with a great diverse education which has helped me to be very diverse in my job.” She feels that the open minded education helped her perform many tasks at work as well as give her a more open outlook within her career.  I asked Garner about some of her favorite high school memories and teachers which she spoke about passionately. Her favorite teacher was Mrs. Collins saying she was the most…
