Isaac Miller, Class of ’17

Isaac Miller, Class of ’17

I am graduating from Ohio University's E.W. Scripps School of Journalism. I started college undecided but changed my major at the end of my second year. One of the highlights of my time at OHIO has been working for University Communications and Marketing (UCM), the university's official communications department. I often write stories to advertise events, highlight achievements of students and/or faculty, and highlight alumni. These stories are published to the OHIO News site and also shared to the University's social media accounts occasionally. I was also the design director of Southeast Ohio Magazine for my journalism capstone class. This…

The Return of Community Service Day

The Return of Community Service Day

By Joey Sampson What is Community Service day? Community Service day is, well, pretty self explanatory. The whole school goes around the community of Athens County and we give back to the community. Some of you might not know what community service day is because our school hasn't done it in almost 3 years because of Covid, and now we are finally going out to serve our community once again. Community service day might sound really boring or like a chore, but it's not as boring as it might sound. You might just think you would go around and pick…

They, She, He, or Xe?

They, She, He, or Xe?

By Jozlyn Bew Sexuality and gender identity has been a long debated subject tossed around in many ways, positive and negative. It’s gotten to the point where most are aware of the ever growing number of identities, names, and sexualities. However, people who aren’t as familiar with the LGBT+ community have had questions about the premise. How do I ask about pronouns? Are they too young to know what they are? Am I? Someone came out to me with a term I don’t understand. What does it mean?  Questions like these are more common than some may think. I will…

What Happened to Arcade Games?

What Happened to Arcade Games?

By Thomas Schwarzel Video games have made major graphical leaps over the past few generations. However, the most culturally significant games tend to be arcade games. Everyone on our planet can tell you about an experience with Pac-Man. Donkey Kong is fondly remembered, and Asteroids' unique look is well remembered.  All of these and more have remained cultural icons of the era.   Finding a definitive version of these classic games to play in the modern era has become difficult; buying an original arcade cabinet isn’t something that the average person can do.  Many releases of these games are the versions…

Abusive Relationships in High School

Abusive Relationships in High School

By Joey Sampson Did you know, according to DVS, 33% of adolescents in America experience some form of abuse from a partner? Abusive relationships are a lot more common in high school than you might think. They happen pretty often and the worst part is that nobody speaks up about it. When you think of the word ´´abuse´´ you probably think of physical abuse such as hitting, but there is a lot more than just physical abuse.  There are all kinds of abuse in high school relationships, such as physical, verbal, sexual, mental, and cultural. These are all kinds of…
