See Ya, Mr. Wryst

See Ya, Mr. Wryst

A long time member of our staff, Mr. Wryst,  will be retiring at the end of the year. Working here for almost 30 years, he’s become a fixture in the school community.  Mr. Wryst grew up in Henrietta Township, Ohio, seven miles south of Lake Eerie; “I grew up next to a corn field,” he told me, where he worked every day for his family business, Henrietta Packaging. He moved to Athens, Ohio when he started going to Ohio University.  At first he didn’t know what his major would be. He was studying zoology, and one of his friends was…

The Life Of A Federal Hocking Bus Driver

The Life Of A Federal Hocking Bus Driver

By Haley K. You may think that our bus drivers have it easy, I mean all they have to do is pick kids up and drop them off right? Wrong! First of all, to even become a bus driver you have to take a written test which includes information on common knowledge, air breaks, and passengers. After passing that portion you have to go over the bus, which means remembering every part of the bus, as well as, doing an air break test in under 30 minutes. To even begin this process, they must pass a drug test, take a…

Addressing Fed Hock’s Changes (2023-2024)

Addressing Fed Hock’s Changes (2023-2024)

By Todd Bonzalez It is no secret by now that Federal Hocking has had what some would say are controversial changes in mind for the next year. Our very own principal, Mr. Amlin, along with Mrs. Wright, had pulled aside our students a few weeks back to discuss some of these changes planned for next year. These conversations were pulled by groups, a separate session for each high school class. The goal of these meetings was to address the new schedule, as well as any questions and concerns among the students. In this article, these new changes will be discussed.…

The Schedule Situation

The Schedule Situation

By Jozlyn Bew - Editor in Chief The cat’s out of the bag.  It’s no secret that the school schedule will be changing drastically in the coming year. The working plan involves a single weekday for clubs, three different class blocking times that flip halfway through the week, and completely different schedules for underclassmen and upperclassmen. It’s safe to say that this is a jarring change from the classic four-block schedule, paired with our hour of free lunchtime.  A change in our day-to-day schedule has been in process for a little while, but now it’s upon us. Even after…

Meet the Teacher: Mr. Sweeney

Meet the Teacher: Mr. Sweeney

By Chelsea Burke This year Federal Hocking has opened their arms to an abundance of new staff members, including the new American and World Studies 9 teacher, Mr. Sweeney. This is Mr. Sweeney’s first year teaching and he’s already gained the respect of so many students! I wanted to interview Mr. Sweeney because I was intrigued to know more about why he chose the subject he did. It’s very rare and inspiring to have a teacher who is so passionate about what they're teaching, who discusses the topic with you rather than just talking at you. He has always been…

Senior Girls Basketball Spotlight 22-23

Senior Girls Basketball Spotlight 22-23

By Juni Ballew Senior year is different for each and every person. Some say it was the best, some say the worst. I personally don't know anything about senior year or the feeling of leaving everything you knew for the last 12 years. In a way I would imagine it can be tough and scary but also freeing and exciting. If you participated in a sport throughout high school or just a couple years you know how important the last year of a sport is for seniors. There's senior night, with raging crowds, gifts, and many congratulations. There's the last…

New Teachers of Federal Hocking: Ms. Kearns

New Teachers of Federal Hocking: Ms. Kearns

By Chelsea B. When I got the chance to write an article about one of Federal Hocking’s new teachers, I jumped at the opportunity to interview Ms. Kearns. Ms. Kearns is one of my favorite teachers because of her dedication to her students and their education. She consistently tries to make learning science fun and engaging for everyone.  Ms. Kearns teaches biology, physical, medical, and environmental sciences. She has only been here with us for a year, but overall this is her 11th year teaching. She attended college at Ohio University before working at Alexander High School for 3 years,…

How to Become a Better Writer

How to Become a Better Writer

By Max Noriega A lot of people don’t know where to start when they begin to write something, (story, article, essay, etc.) and a lot of kids just don’t want to write, but at some point in our lives we are going to have to so, here are some tips for when you’re writing something. Read good authors. It goes without saying, but it should still be said. If you don't read the script well, you won’t understand the story. Everyone begins to learn from the teacher, imitates the teacher, finds their voice through the teacher. Read as much as…
