Wranglin’ Wrestlers

Wranglin’ Wrestlers

Have you ever wondered what it's like to be a wrestler? Competitive, intense, and fun are some ways people have described the sport. The coach of the Federal Hocking Lancers wrestling team, Kevin Sheridan, said that his wrestling career was pretty good. He started wrestling in 1982, his sophomore year, and kept wrestling through his senior year and almost went to states but just missed it by one match.  Sheridan can still recall his first meet ever. “I was wrestling a guy from Athens who was heavyweight, before the match even started he busted his own nose and licked the…

Adding Physical Activity to Your Life

Adding Physical Activity to Your Life

Today's physical activity is something that has been left out on a daily basis of our life. Whether we are too busy, tired, having a lack of confidence, fear of being injured or not motivated, we always find a reason to not do it. Lives are becoming increasingly sedentary through the use of motorized transport and the increased use of screens for work, education and recreation. “Many have left it because they find no enjoyment in doing it and end up becoming a couch potato person,” FH P.E Cody Mason said. Physical Activity is any body movement that works your…

Dogs as Companions

Dogs as Companions

Fluffy, drooly, yet pretty smart, dogs have earned the title for best companion over the centuries of loyalty to humans. People get dogs for comfort and companionship, as dogs have an innate ability to understand people's emotions making it easier to connect on a higher level. FH Ag Teacher Joann Pfeiffer has experience with dogs. She recognizes there are benefits to owning canines.  “Company and unconditional love, your dog will always love you.”  Pfeiffer stated she never really trained inside dogs, but farm dogs. However, she has some advice for training dogs in general.  “Just remember you're the boss, make…

Remembering Lester Green

On January 5, 2025, Lester A. Green Sr., a wonderful man and staple of the Federal Hocking community, passed away at the Belpre campus of Marietta Memorial Hospital. The Mysterious Music Man

The Mysterious Music Man

In Athens, Ohio, many of us regularly walk past a teacher and think nothing too much about them. Other than that they have what we would consider a regular job when it comes to being a teacher. They go to the school, teach for six hours, and do some grading and work for their class assignments for the next day or week. And go home without worrying about their safety.  But I came into contact with a teacher who lives an alternative life, who runs their class and life a little differently. He has a different lifestyle than what we…

The Great Golter

The Great Golter

Every high school has a diamond in the rough, and math teacher Paul Golter is no exception. Golter grew up in Hermiston, Oregon and went to Hermiston High School. He said his high school was no bigger than Athens High School.  “I went to high school before cell phones, so I would get in trouble for having a book out instead of a phone.” Before getting his job at Federal Hocking High School, he worked at Washington State University. He went to school for chemical engineering but worked on the school's computers. Golter moved his family from his home in…
