The Mysterious Music Man

The Mysterious Music Man

In Athens, Ohio, many of us regularly walk past a teacher and think nothing too much about them. Other than that they have what we would consider a regular job when it comes to being a teacher. They go to the school, teach for six hours, and do some grading and work for their class assignments for the next day or week. And go home without worrying about their safety.  But I came into contact with a teacher who lives an alternative life, who runs their class and life a little differently. He has a different lifestyle than what we…

The Great Golter

Every high school has a diamond in the rough, and math teacher Paul Golter is no exception. Golter grew up in Hermiston, Oregon and went to Hermiston High School. He said his high school was no bigger than Athens High School.  “I went to high school before cell phones, so I would get in trouble for having a book out instead of a phone.” Before getting his job at Federal Hocking High School, he worked at Washington State University. He went to school for chemical engineering but worked on the school's computers. Golter moved his family from his home in…

A Little Piece of Heaven

A Little Piece of Heaven

Nicknamed Winner Woods, the Lois Busch Winner Nature Preserve was established by the Athens Conservancy this spring. I would even call it a little piece of heaven right next door. With 106 sprawling acres of tall Oak trees and tiny Pawpaw trees, the land was donated from the Winner family as a way to honor the benefactor’s late mother, Lois Busch Winner. The land has been in the family for over 100 years, but the family wanted the people to experience the land’s beauty just as they had, first hand. Athens Conservancy Board member Aimee Delach really loved that the…

Girls with Goals

The Federal Hocking Lancers’ volleyball team had a very exciting season. They went 15-9 and fell just short in the district semi-finals. Although it didn’t end the way they wanted it to, several members of the team reflected on a great season.  Going into the season, it was obvious that the team was going to face some adversity. Not only did they have to build team chemistry between players, but they also had to adjust to a new coaching staff. Senior Olivia Tabler felt that learning to trust and respect first year Head Coach Ryan Grimm, and the rest of…
