The Federal Hocking Lancers’ volleyball team had a very exciting season. They went 15-9 and fell just short in the district semi-finals. Although it didn’t end the way they wanted it to, several members of the team reflected on a great season.
Going into the season, it was obvious that the team was going to face some adversity. Not only did they have to build team chemistry between players, but they also had to adjust to a new coaching staff. Senior Olivia Tabler felt that learning to trust and respect first year Head Coach Ryan Grimm, and the rest of the new coaching staff, was one of the team’s biggest challenges at the beginning of the season. As the season progressed, senior Audree Chapman felt that the coaches and players adjusted well to each other, and were able to build positive connections.
“They lift us up. If we do something good they make sure we know we’re on fire. They’re constantly yelling on the bench to keep the team hype”.
Chapman also said that having a student section towards the end of their season helped bring energy. Their team enjoyed having the support of the student body.
Sophomore Brenlee Cottrill and Tabler both hit major milestones in their volleyball careers this season. Cottrill had 1,000 digs and Tabler had 1,000 assists. They both attribute much of their success to their teammates, coaches, and supportive families.
Seniors Markala Goeglein, Chapman, and Tabler all describe a similar role that they had this year: to be a leader. Having an uplifting and positive presence, as well as communicating with other players and coaches, was vital. There is no doubt that they have helped build a culture that the underclassmen intend to carry on.
“They’ve had a huge impact on me. They’ve taught me a lot and shown me what a good leader and good attitude looks like,” Freshman Paige Amlin said.
As for next season, the future is bright. The returning players are eager to have a successful season. Cottrill says the team already has a few goals.
“We want to win the TVC and a district title”.
The team feels that these are attainable goals. Tune in next season to watch the Lady Lancers Volleyball team hit the court and reach these goals.
