The Night We Dance

By: Cassidy Lockhart

As the air gets colder, dress shops get filled to the brim with teenage girls. Homecoming is just a few weeks away, and students and staff alike are becoming filled with excitement. The dance is on October 18th from 8-10:30pm, with the game being on the 17th.

Get ready to dance the night away in the high school gym as D.J. Thompson plays a mix of his playlist and student recommendations. A photo stand with a nice background that matches the Masquerade theme nicely will be available to use. There will also be a disco ball, and lights to help set the mood. Senior Class Treasurer Rilo Wilkes has been busy organizing.

“We want to make a sorta relaxed but fun environment.”

There will be meals and drinks available to buy during the dance, including gluten free items. While meals will cost money, there will be snacks and some drinks available for free. Some examples are pop, cookies, pizza, and popcorn. Students cannot bring food onto the dance floor, but there will be chairs and tables in the commons to sit at.

While you dance and eat the night away, you will be surrounded by beautiful decorations. Lights, balloons, and a disco ball are just some examples of things to look out for. With all the space the gym provides, there will be plenty of room for fun.

In previous years, the dance was held in the commons, but the officers knew that students didn’t enjoy that. The senior class officers have taken students’ ideas into consideration at every step. From voting on the theme, to a form being posted for song suggestions, students have had a massive say in homecoming this year.

This includes getting ready for the big game. Students are working on game prep and decorations to help school spirit spread throughout the halls. These include float decorations, skit, decorating a hoop, and wall decoration. Students were able to pick which group they wanted to be a part of, and what they wanted to do within this group.

Senior Hailey Young-Stewart has said that she has been enjoying making wall decorations, and that it has been a great opportunity to spend time with classmates and build bonds. Despite all the fun, she feels like there wasn’t enough time to get everything done.

“I feel like it’s going well, but that we didn’t have enough time to prepare.”

Despite the challenges, Young-Stewart and the others doing the senior wall are working hard to get it done, and they aren’t the only ones. All homecoming prep groups have been putting extra elbow grease into their projects to finish in time for the big night.

Current students aren’t the only ones who get to have fun at the game, though. Alumni will be back to have a fun filled night back out on the field. Band alumni get to perform a song on the field with current band members, and this year’s song is Crazy Little Thing Called Love by Queen.

While the band is performing, cheerleaders will also have some old faces with them. Homecoming allows for current and past students to have a night full of fun, and to build stronger community bonds.

As we get closer and closer to the dance, the school and students get more and more filled with school spirit. Whether it’s being part of preparations, showing spirit at the game, or dancing the night away, there are plenty of ways to enjoy this homecoming season.
