If you’ve seen a new blonde staff member at Federal Hocking High School, then you’ve probably seen Haley Schmidt. This is Schmidt’s first year, but since she is a teaching fellow, this will be Schmidt’s only year at FH. Schmidt is an intervention specialist and typically teaches Math and English for small groups grades 9-12. Schmidt is getting her master’s degree at Ohio University.
Schmidt has always wanted to be a teacher and likes working with kids. Her love of teaching stems from her parents. Her mother is a math and science teacher and her father is an elementary school principal. Schmidt enjoys working at Federal Hocking. Her favorite part about teaching is getting to know and connect with the students, although she doesn’t enjoy all the planning that comes with it.
“I would say for the most part she’s laid back. She’s more engaged with students than other teachers,” Junior Waylon Francis said.
Schmidt’s parents and one brother live in Gahanna, just outside of Columbus, where she was born and raised and still lives in the summer time. Schmidt has two dachshunds and two adopted cats. Schmidt also likes to travel and has been on cruises to Jamaica, Bermuda, The Bahamas, and on a mission trip to Guatemala. Schmidt would like to visit all 50 states and has already traveled to 13 of them. Schmidt also wants to go to New Zealand and at the end of this school year she will be moving there for a year to teach!
Some last facts about Schmidt are she likes to work out, cook, bake, and color. She likes the tv shows “Friends” and “Grey’s Anatomy”. Her favorite color is teal, and her favorite animal is a horse. She said her favorite foods are pasta and corn. She also loves Disney World, the summer time, and the beach. Get time with her this year, because she will be on the other side of the continent next year.
