The Federal Hocking Math Club is a challenging and surprisingly delicious after school activity. The only place where pie and pi collide.
For students who want to be challenged or just love the subject, they can find comfort in the Math Club. Currently it is half a dozen members strong. Typically the club is larger but the school year has only just begun and the club is ready to grow. Any student who wants to join can visit Mrs. Torrence in Rm 405 any day that the Math Club meets. This is the second and fourth Monday of every month. That would make the next meeting on the 11th of October.
The Math Club is all about math, how obvious, but there’s more to it. Mrs. Torrence gives out problems that are familiar to club members and then works up to things beyond any of the current math classes, working from simple algebra and advancing to new and exciting problems. Mrs. Torrence also brings dessert to every meeting for students to enjoy while they work. And staying on the “not math” topic, the Math Club raises money for a trip to Kings Island at the end of the school year. Due to Covid-19 the club was not able to go on the trip. But now, with the funds from last year, they are already ready for their journey next semester.
From the mouth of Mrs. Torrence herself, the reason that she continues to facilitate the Math Club is because, “I really enjoy math.” Federal Hocking has only one math elective, trigonometry, and Mrs. Torrence feels that the Math Club is the perfect alternative for students who want more math in their life. Her main goal for her students is to keep their interest in math alive far after graduation. And being advanced in math is beneficial for advanced exams like the ACT.
Math Club may not be for everyone, but there are some students that identify with it heavily. With the perks of regular desserts, an amusement park trip, and exam readiness, it’s not a bad idea to consider joining.
