The End of an Era: The Poston’s Story

By: Adam McKnight

Whether it be a trip before school or a run before practice, many students at Federal Hocking are familiar with our little town’s convenience store Poston’s. Originally owned by Donnie and Sue Poston, this store has been a staple of the community for 34 years, and has just recently undergone renovations after being sold to Brent and Cindy Hayes.

When he was running the store, Donnie and Sue would wake up and open the store, and after an hour or so, Donnie would head back home to their farm to tend to the animals. During his hour at the store, he would place orders and check the stock of the feed building.

“It was a tough balance. I’d have to go clear down to Southside Parkersburg to get feed for the building,”  Donnie said.

When asked about what all would be changing, Poston said “They’re keeping it all about the same. I mean, they knocked down a couple walls, but aside from that they’re just going to add to what’s already there.”

Many people within the community would be happy to hear that Poston’s will be keeping Sue’s World-Famous Ham Salad. Some things will be added though, such as a soda fountain, a coffee bar, and there have even been talks of offering pizza in some way. On top of all that, ice cream will be returning to Poston’s.

One student who prefers to remain unnamed appreciated Donnie’s generosity.

“I hope he keeps getting us snacks and drinks at the end of the year. I remember when he would get us ice cream every year before the store got rid of it.  I hope he starts getting it for us again.”

Donnie said he was “excited to see what they do with the place,” saying “It’s good to change every now and then.” He also said he has good feelings about the acquisition, saying the Hayes are “Good for the community and they care about [Stewart].”

Despite the ending of the era of the Postons, many people are ready to see what comes next from the store.
