On January 5, 2025, Lester A. Green Sr., a wonderful man and staple of the Federal Hocking community, passed away at the Belpre campus of Marietta Memorial Hospital. Many people within our district would know Green as a board member, putting in 19 years as a Federal Hocking Board member. During his time around Fed Hock, he was a bus driver as well as a founding member of the Athletic Boosters Association. Back in 2016, the Fed Hock football field was renamed to honor both Green and his wife, Betty. This change was brought about to recognize the both of them for their continued support of the athletic programs at Fed Hock.
Given the time he spent around the school, it comes as no surprise that many members of the community have fond memories of Green.
High School Principal Jake Amlin remembers Green as the passionate man he was.
“Lester Green is a FH icon. He volunteered more hours for our district than most people spend at their full-time jobs. His passion for the district’s student-athletes was unquestioned, and he was always eager to talk Lancer sports with whomever he was around. We will all miss the work that he did for our district, but we will miss his joyful heart even more.”
Athletic Director Stephanie Evans worked closely with Green.
“In February 2023, I was able to present Lester and Betty the Friend of Youth Award for the Southeast District for dedicating over 56 years to helping out with the athletic programs at FH. It was an absolute honor to be able to do so. I know they were both humbled and surprised to receive the award and very appreciative of the recognition. It is amazing that they have poured their hearts and souls into our district for almost 60 years.” She continues, saying “Another fond memory is having Lester as the honorary starter for the first track meet on our brand new track last year. He was so excited to finally have a new track here at FHHS and with his officiating experience as a track official, it was perfect to have him as the honorary starter for the meet.”
Tamera Tate, a Fed Hock alumna who rode Green’s bus, also reached out to share.
“Kind and dependable are two words that come to mind. Lester truly cared for every single person in our community. It was more than titles and positions that he held. He showed up ready for whatever tasks needed done for so many years. The fact that Betty is right back to serving our Lancer community is proof of their loyalty and love.”
Tate also included a screenshot of her Facebook post, remembering Green’s time as a bus driver.
“Many years ago he was my bus driver. On the last day of school he would give each kid a can of soda and a small bag of chips. It’s a fond elementary school memory of mine and I’m sure others.”
Fed Hock School Board President Kerry Sheridan-Boyd remembers Green as both a coworker and as a Lancer sports fan.
“I served on the board with him for seven years but have known him my entire life. The huge thing I like and remember most about Mr. Green was he truly wanted what was best for all students of FH. He often said in meetings ‘That’s what’s best for the kids so let’s do it.’ Of course he had a love for athletics and was a track official up to the end and was on the sidelines rocking his Lancer shirt at most all athletic events.” She finished out by adding “He was a great man and bled maroon and gold all the way to the end!”
Green will be remembered fondly by all likes of the Fed Hock community. His loyalty and dedication to our school will forever be remembered.
