Marching Band: The Musical Sport

By Eden Haynes

The musical and lively sport, marching band, is a team of musicians who play music while also performing marching drills. Our own marching band, the Federal Hocking Marching Lancers is directed by Julia Olson and assistant director, Conor Hartwick. After practicing hours Tuesdays through Fridays and sometimes even on Saturdays, our talented band performs during half-time of the high school football games – creating all kinds of instrumental beats. The season starts after The Fourth of July with band camp, which runs from Sunday to Friday.

Director Olson and several members commented about marching band and their opinions on the whole sport in general, stating that band camp was “good and fun,”  “AWESOME!!!!,” and that, “Itt gets hard in the middle, but is worth it.” Some of their favorite things about marching band as first stated by Olsen is, “when you perform and you know the hard work pays off and all the sweat was worth it..” As also stated by members, “The best thing about marching band in my opinion is everything, it’s all fun” or, ‘the people and their supportiveness.” and finally, “learning all the fun songs.”

The band has also been working on classic hits from the 90s such as, “Hit Me With Your Best Shot” by Pat Benatar, “Come As You Are” by Nirvana, “Don’t You Forget About Me” by Simple Minds, and “Thunder Rolls” by Garth Brooks.

The Marching Band will be performing an evening concert of their works at 7pm in the HS Auditorium on Friday, Oct 29.
