Kris Butcher, Class of ’02

After high school,  I got a bachelor’s degree in political science from Ohio University.  Currently I work for the National Park Service.  I am the Superintendent of two of the newer units of the National Park Service. (Birmingham Civil Rights National Monument and Freedom Riders National Monument)  Right now, I’m on a temporary assignment to Flagstaff, Arizona as the Superintendent of three parks. (Walnut Canyon National Monument, Wupatki National Monument, and Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument).

For students interested in this kind of work, education is certainly important. But probably more important is finding a way to get into federal service. It’s extremely competitive. So, if you’re not a veteran, the best way to get into a federal job is to intern or volunteer for an agency when you are a student.
